HSBH Rapid CityThe Black Hills shelter was originally established in November 1956 and was disbanded following the flood of 1972. In April of 1976, the shelter wasopened in the former wastewater treatment plant. It was remodeled with double high stacked small cages that drained into an open sewage trough designed to handle about 2,500 total animals annually, with 75 dog runs and 45 cat cages. The Pennington Humane Society was established November 1968. Later the name was changed to the Humane Society of the Black Hills (HSBH).

Your Stories

"My pet's story: My husband and I had just gotten married and were looking for a dog. We wanted something small, any breed, as long as it was friendly. I went to the BH Humane Society, and saw a cage with a name tag for "Sam", but couldn't see Sam at first, because he was curled up at the front of the cage. He had a hold tag on him, because someone else was adopting him, so I didn't look too hard at Sam.
