Animal Services & Enforcement Officer - Full-time

Rapid City is growing, and so are we! The Humane Society of the Black Hills (HSBH) has an upcoming opening for an Animal Services and Enforcement (ASE) officer this Spring.

The HSBH is an open-admission shelter located in Rapid City, South Dakota. The HSBH’s Animal Services and Enforcement officers are instrumental in managing community animal-related issues with professionalism and compassion. ASE officers are sworn in to uphold animal-related ordinances and statutes (law enforcement experience is a plus, but not required). The ideal candidate for this position shall have a strong work ethic, the maturity to calmly handle various situations, be detailed-oriented, and have a passion for animal welfare and community outreach.

General Summary:

Animal Services and Enforcement officers enforce local and regional laws concerning the care and treatment of animals. They respond to calls regarding distressed animals and work directly with citizens concerning animal control issues. Animal Control officers work to maintain public health standards by making communities safe for both people and animals. Officers respond to calls from citizens about stray animals, suspected animal cruelty or deceased animals. Officers may have to capture or rescue animals, but other times they administer warnings or citations to citizens suspected of animal cruelty and mistreatment. Animal Control officers enforce ordinances, strictly follow policy and procedures, maintain accurate records, and work toward building and maintaining a positive relationship between the Humane Society of the Black Hills with other enforcement agencies and the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED. Associates degree preferred.
  • Complete online National Animal Care and Control Association (NACA) classes (ACO Basic Certification Training) and certify in Animal Control with the Association, learning proper law enforcement techniques and actions, within one year of employment with HSBH.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Background check required.
  • Minimum age to apply: 21 years old

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the laws and ordinances pertaining to animal control and humane treatment of animals.
  • Ability to use animal control equipment and protective devices.
  • Ability to enforce local, state, and federal laws governing animal control and zoonosis.
  • Ability to maintain good planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to take and follow directions from supervisor.
  • Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.
  • Ability to maintain a valid South Dakota driver license and a good driving record.
  • Ability to maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with other employees and respond to general public complaints.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Work is performed inside and/or outside a building. Work is done in a variety of weather conditions and outdoor elements, such as: excessive heat, humidity, intermittent noise, and inclement cold weather. Work is done in a variety of environmental conditions, such as: unknown and dangerous conditions, unusual environment stress, contagious infectious disease, irritating chemicals, life-threatening situations, solvents, dirt, dust, constant noise, and slippery/uneven walking surfaces. Must be capable of working closely with others or alone, working irregular hours, weekends, working with protective devices, and traveling by car 75% of the time. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, straight pulling, pulling hand over hand, simple grasping, dual simultaneous grasping, repeated bending, sitting, standing, pushing, crouching, crawling, twisting, kneeling, stooping, climbing stairs, walking, and reaching above shoulders. Ability to see, write, read, count identify shade of colors, perceive depth, and hearing is needed to perform the essential functions of this job.

Customer Service Representative - Full-Time

Join the Humane Society of the Black Hills’ Customer Service team and make a lasting, positive impression on both people and animals!

Customer Service Representatives are responsible for client care at the Humane Society of the Black Hills (HSBH). Representatives provide impeccable customer service; impart accurate information; maintain a safe and healthy environment; process sales transactions; and keep precise records.

Customer Service Representatives interact with the public at our shelter’s front office, providing information about HSBH services, both over the telephone and in person. Representatives handle incoming animals, whether stray, surrender, or foster, and process all associated paperwork to include data entry in multiple computer systems. A calm, friendly demeanor and computer skills are a must.

Essential Duties and Functions:

People Care

  • Provide quality customer service to clients, volunteers and staff while actively promoting the Society’s mission, services, programs, and events.
  • Assist clients with returning their animals to them, taking in owner surrender animals, and stray animals.
  • Encouraging clients bringing in stray animals, looking for their lost animals, or clients who have found animals to fill out designated forms with all pertinent information accurately and completely.
  • Obtain any and all information available with regards to animals that are surrendered, by utilizing profiles, asking questions, and making calls to veterinarians to verify vaccinations.
  • Facilitate client/animal interactions to insure a safe and pleasant experience.
  • Answer telephone calls promptly and courteously, providing accurate information.
  • Facilitate retail sales
  • Model and encourage the humane treatment of animals.
  • Promote donation and giving opportunities as appropriate; accept and acknowledge monetary and in-kind donations.
  • Represent the Humane Society in a positive manner by professional personal appearance

Financial Responsibility

  • Responsible for incoming financial transactions.
  • Responsible for closing and balancing cash drawer
  • Responsible for inventory of all retail items.

Record Keeping

  • Complete all necessary forms and data entry to process adoptions.
  • Complete timely and accurate computer data entry; ensure data integrity using both paper and computer based filing systems.
  • Maintain materials related to adoptions, education and programs.

Animal Care

  • Report health abnormalities to medical personnel.
  • Report behavior abnormalities to a supervisor.
  • Assist with evaluation and treatment processes.

Volunteers

  • Work cooperatively with all volunteers and recognize the talent and commitment they bring to the Society.

Safety

  • Ensure a safe work environment, following all safety guidelines, including PPE, and modeling safe work practice.
  • Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Work is performed primarily in the front office of an animal shelter environment.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, and sitting at a computer workstation 4-8 hours per day.
  • Exposure to disinfectant solutions when in the kennel area.
  • Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodations.
  • Consistently exposed to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Customer service experience.
  • Weekend availability required.
  • Available to work holidays and overtime as needed.
